As a cooperating group o f Christian churches we
have com pleted 9 years o f caring fo r elderly persons
. . . . 9 years at Wah Hong and 3 years at Kwai Fong.
Together the tw o hostels house 269 persons. According
to G overnm ent’s 1977 Annual R eport, Hong Kong has
m ore than 165,000 persons over the age o f 60. Research
done by the Social W elfare D epartm ent and the Hong
Kong Council o f Social Service shows th a t there are
over 20,000 elderly people in need o f hostel accom o-
dation.
The w aiting list fo r Wah Hong and Kwai Fong has
over 100 names on it. Because o f this and the increasing
need fo r such hostels, the C om m ittee fo r the E lderly
has been planning a th ird hostel. The new hostel has
been accepted by the Social W elfare Departm ent and
recommended to the Housing D epartm ent fo r inclusion
in the Shuen Lee Estate at Clear Water Bay Road. B ut
