The Committee is grateful to many churches and groups in the
community for their interest and support for the hostels.
The Committee is particularly in-debted to the young people
of the Five-churches Youth Fellowship in Tsuen Wan for their
support of. Kwai.Fong Hostel through fund raising at Chinese
New Year time. These churhces are: Tsuen Yuen Church (CCC),
Crown of Thorn Church (Anglican), Asbury Methodist Church,
Salvation Army and the Catholic Church. The young people raised
over HK$6,000 for thd hostel.
A word of thanks should go to Nethersole Hospital and Caritas
Medical Center for providing regular medical care and community
nursing service for both hostels.
Care For The Mentally Retarded Children
Miss May Siu, a nurse who was seconded by the Junk Bay Medical
Relief Council and received specialized training in Canada and
the USA, returned to Hong Kong in mid-December 1974. With her
training and knowledge the Management Committee, appointed by
the Division of Christian Service and the Junk Bay Medical Relief
Council, was able to implement the goals of providing institutional
services for ten severely mentally retarded children.
The Ward is located at the Sunnyside Preventorium, Junk Bay.
All renovation and interior decoration work for the Children's
Ward, Staff Quarters and Staff Guest Lounge have been completed.
Employment of other staff and assessment of applications will be
done in May, 1975, followed by receiving children into the Ward.
It is estimated that to take care of one child, all inclusive, will
cost HK$12,000 a year. Through active support of the participating
churches the Division has received over HK$100,000.- as of March,
1975. One of the main purposes for initiating this project is to
stimulate community concern for and demonstrating a need of
services for the severely mentally retarded children in our
cominunity.
