past most of the askings have been in the area of Service,
increasingly there are askings in the area of mission.
Therefore this Committee considered the work of the Church
in Hong Kong and recommended that the mission priorities
for the next two years in Hong Kong be:
(1) Joint Action for Mission projects.
(2) Lay training and youth development.
(3) The Church and the city - including research.
(4) the Church and Industry.
(d) Plans for the future include a seminar on Church Growth
and Development in Hong Kong; and also study of the
possibility of serving our community churches.
Church Unity Committee
This year since the planning for the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity was done by another Committee, the Unity Committee
was not as much involved as in previous years. One of the
interesting things taking place in Inter-Church Relations which
has been the joint services between the Agape Methodist Church and
the Mandarin Church of the Church of Christ in China in Kwun Tong.
This Committee received a report on this project. After hearing
this report the Committee requested more detailed information
on that experiment and along with information regarding the joint
work in the Jurong Church in Singapore and the Shum Oi Church in
Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon.
The Committee has also received reports concerning unity
conversations now taking place in Hong Kong. The Sheng Kung Hui
and the Chinese Methodist Church and the English Synod of the
Methodist Church have appointed representatives to a negotiating
committee which is charged with preparing a report regarding the
possibility of union. The Committee has completed its work and
the report was sent to the participating churches before Easter.
One of the recommendations is that these unity conversations be
enlarged and opened to any church interested.
Conversations on union have also been taking place between
the Wei Li Kung Hui and the Chinese Methodist Church. A Joint
Consultative Committee on Unity between these two churches has
completed a draft report which recommended as the basis for
negotiating for church union between the two churches. This
report was adopted at a special session of the Annual Conference
of the Wei Li Kung Hui and is now under consideration by the
Chinese Methodist Church. The Unity Committee of the Council will
be considering these reports and their implications for the work
of the Committee.
