were scheduled for early 1970, with test programs to follow. These
will be produced jointly with TACAVA.

SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION SYSTEM: The most promising new project
was the construction of a simultaneous translation system. It
was first constructed by AVSC technical staff for the consultation
in January. Since then it has been enlarged to contain 150
headsets. It is available for renting.

            DIVISION FOR SOCIAL SERVICE

The Division for Social Service is concerned with welfare
schemes of all kinds and also with tackling the causes of social
            ills at the roots.

Committee for a United Christian Hospital

The United Christian Hosptial is now progressing speedily
towardsthe time when construction can finally begin. Solutions
seem to be near at hand to the captial funds problems, which had
earlier stalled and delayed the project over a period of several
years. To date firm assurances have been received for HK$10.2
million from mission groups in North America and United Kingdom,
and from the German Protestant Central Agency. An amount more
than equalling the sum already assured must come from a local
fund raising effort, the Hong Kong Government, and the Jockey Club,
in order to complete the project whose total capital cost,
including buildings and equipment, exceeds HK$20 million.
Progress has been made towarcfe obtaining final decisions from
Government and the Jockey Club, Plans are being developed for
the fund raising drive to industrialists, part of the constituency
to whom the project is looking for help with the local drive.

A site of approximately 6.5 acres has been reserved for the
hospital in Kwun Tong adjacent to the Sau Mau Ping Resettlement
Estate. The population of Kwun Tong now exceeds 500,000 persons
and our 379-bed hospital will likely encounter an extremely
heavy load as it is the only hospital for Kwun Tong. Sketch
plans were completed in June 1969 end subsequently approved by
the Medical and Health Department. The working drawings should
be sufficiently refined by May for submission to the Building
Authority; then the structural detail plans and specifications
will be developed with a view to begin construction the latter
part of 1970. If this can be achieved, and construction proceed
without major delays, opening of the hospital will occur in
            September 1972.

In October 1969, the Director of the Christian Medical Commis-
sion of the World Council of Churches, Mr. J. C. McGilvray, and
an associate of his, came to Hong Kong and articulated the
challenge facing mission hsopitals around the world: that
hospitals should treat not only those who become ill and seek
treatment at the hospital, but they should reach out to effect
change in the disease and health patterns of the community in
which it is found. Towards this end a Task Force on Community
Health has been formed which is seeking to determine how we can
best use our limited resources to achieve maximum overall health
benefit for the community of Kwun Tong. It is hoped that one
specific aspect would be a community nursing program. The concept
of health is being viewed from a comprehensive standpoint including
the physical, the mental, the spiritual, the environmental as well
as inter-relationships between persons. In order to approach
achievement of these goals, stimulation and mobilization of all
            possible resources w i l l be essential.

            Hnng Kong Christian Service

1969, the third anniversary for Hong Kong Christian Service,
was a year of challenge and progress. During this past year the
