The Council has sent an appeal to the local churches and as
a result, $2,628.45 has been raised for the needy.
Also, in press reports, we read about the suffering and needs
of the people in the former Biafran region of Nigeria. The
Council together with the Hong Kong Christian Service sent a
joint appeal to the local churches and Christian schools asking
them to help relief the suffering. As a result, a total of
$27,616.98 has_been received and sent to the World Council of
Churches for the relief for Nigeria-Biafra people.
ASSOCIATED MEMBERSHIP OF THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
In 1969, the Council applied to the World Council of Churches
for associated membership. The Central Committee of the W.C.C.
at its August 16th 1969 meeting voted to invite the Council as
an associated Council of the W.C.C. This brings to Twenty-five
the nuber of National Christian Councils in association with the
W.C.C. and for the total of 242 member churches.
During the year, the Congregational Council for World Mission
has informed the Council that they wished to withdraw from
membership of the Council as from 1st January, 1970 because
the CCFWM now has no more work of its own in Hong Kong and
actually they are represented in the Council through the Church
of Christ in China. This was approved by the Executive Committee
of the Council.
A W ORD OF THANKS
The Hong Kong Christian Council wishes to express its hearty
thanks to all local church leaders, both clergy and lay for their
active participation and creative cooperation in the ecumenical
movement.
We are most grateful to the churches, the Mission Boards
and our many friends local and abroad for their constant concern
and financial support which have strengthened our hands and
have made the work of the Council possible.
To members of the committees, the executives and the staff,
we are grateful to them for their leadership and to all who have
served the churches through the work of the Council so loyally.
We are confident that with their continued support, we can
emerge the stronger and can look forward to a closer cooperation
in our common task for mission.
