world situation today? They tried to understand His Calling and
our response.
As your General Secretary, had the privilege of attending my
first World Council Assembly on behalf of the Hong Kong Christian
Council. On the one hand, I found it exciting to feel the dynamics &
the specific concerns of the World Council members as they related
to world issues and the Church's ministries in mission and service.
On the other hand, I found it frustrating when I tried to relate
my experience at the 5th Assembly to the church life here in Hong
Kong. This was true both in terms of contemporary theological
reflection on the teaching of Christ and the life-style of the Hong
Kong churches. We need to have a sense of urgency. We must be
"turned on" to the Christ Jesus who can free and unite us in today's
society, the world where most of the people are suffering from
hunger, oppression, injustice and the lack of dignity. Perhaps we
should pray for the dropping of a bomb or the coming of a flood which
would shake up and wipe out the comfortable church life that we know.
For we certainly haven't succeeded in
preaching good news to the poor
proclaiming release to the captives, the
recovering of sight to the blind,
setting at liberty those who are oppressed
proclaiming the acceptable year of the Lord.

work for this ideal. This year, a new feature was added to the
celebration. It was a Musical Worship Service held at the China
Congregational Church. Four choirs joined together to provide the
music. They were from the host church, the Hong Kong Methodist
Church and the Roman Catholic St. J u d e ' s Church and St. Margaret's
