II. SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS SINCE LAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
A) CONCERN FOR PEOPLE IN NEED
1) Young People from Vietnam
In June last year, when 118 Vietnam refugees were sent back
to South Vietnam, 22 people were arrested by the Hong Kong
Government for illegally entering the restricted area at the
Kai Tak Airport. These 22 people, relatives of the 118,
were also overseas Chinese from South Vietnam. They came
to the Council for help. The following immediate action
was taken and followed up by the assistance of Council
staff members,
a) To appeal to the Governor on Humanitarian Leniency
b) To employ a solicitor
As a result all the 22 people were bound for HK$50 each and
not to be recorded by the court. To show their appreciation
for the assistance given by the Council, the 22 young
Vietnamese presented a brass cross and shield to the Council.
We are grateful to the Wei Li Kung Hui for her full support
of the action taken by the Council by sharing the cost of
HK$3,500 which was spent for employing a solicitor.
2) People in Hunger
People dying of hunger is not a matter of believe it or not
a fact. Millions of people in the Third World are suffering
malnutrition and hunger, living on the edge of death. To
participate in the world wide churches' concern about famine,
the Council designated Good Friday, March 28, 1975, as a day
to fast and to remember how Christ gave Himself for others.
