THE UNITED CHRISTIAN HOSPITALS
The United Christian Hospitals continues to consider what is
the most effective role of the Church in enabling health through its
various programs.
The eight (out of 15) Directors on the Board nominated by the
Hong Kong Christian Council as of December 1975 are Dr. Frank C. Y.
Cheng, Mr. John Cheung, Canon P. Y. Cheung, Dr. Ding Lik Kin, General
Secretary of the Hong Kong Christian Council, Miss Ko Siu Wah, Mr. Lam
Chik Ho, and Mr. Yung Hei Kwong.
In August 1975 the Hospital opened to its full size of 545 beds.
The following table shows statistics for the calendar years 1974 and
1975, indicating a heavy increase in patient load:

In May 1975 the psychiatric inpatient ward 28 beds opened
for voluntary short-term patients, and functions along the "therapeutic
community" lines emphasing social therapy concepts. Another speciality
service is the geriatric retraining ward of 40 beds, the first in Hong
Kong.
In March 1976, the Board of Directors decided that no person
is to be denied service on the basis of place of residence, with the
exception of maternity and psychiatric cases which are limited to
Kwun Tong residents.
