           MEDICAL AND HEALTH A R E

The Division's Medical Services Committee after sponsoring
the workshop "Health - Whose Responsibility?” in early last year,
this year is focusing its concerns on some concrete proposals and

recommendations received from the workshop participants, e.g.
forming a Medical Action Group, sponsoring a Community-wide Campaign
for anti-smoking and promoting health education in community etc.

Members of the Committee felt that health education should be placed
high in its list of priorities for the Committee's concern. A
Health Education Planning Group composed of medical doctor, nurses
and community workers was formed to promote this. In order to

introduce general medical and health knowledge to the public the
group has compiled a series of health care materials. It is
negotiating with a TV station about the production of twenty-six

30 minute programmes on health education.

      5. COLLEGE STUDENT WORK PROJECTS

During the school year 1975/76 the Division assisted a total

of 170 college students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and
five post-secondary schools through the College Student Work Projects.

The College Student Work Projects by providing financial

assistance to needy college students, not only enables them to meet
a part of their financial needs, but also involvesthem in services

to other people. Each student receives HK$200 per month. In turn

he/she contributes eight hours of work per week for other people.
They are placed as tutors in study centres, librarians for children1s
libraries, youth club leaders, clerical workers for welfare agencies
           etc.

In the Summer of 1975 a group of fifteen workstudents partici-

pated in a work camp at Junk Bay. They worked on painting, gardening
and building a platform at the front door of the home of severely
mentally retarded children in Junk Bay.
