(8 ) Concern for the HEALTH of undernourished children led many
years ago to our child feeding programme. A large number of
schools and kindergartens, operated for the benefit of needy
children, are given supplies of vitamin crackers and powdered
milk for preparation and serving every morning and afternoon.
Approximately 2,000 boys and girls benefit each day through
this aspect of the child feeding programme.
(9) Our MEDICAL AND DENTAL CLINIC, located in our Tsimshatsui
Social Service Centre, provides comprehensive health services
to a large number of underprivileged patients from Kowloon's
overcrowded urban districts. About 200 patients are being
treated by full-time medical and dental officers at very
reduced cost. This Clinic is a response to the desperate
need for out-patient clinics in Hong Kong.
(10) There is one indispensable element in all that we do which
can best be expressed in the slogan: Help to help yourself.
This coincides with the inherent dignity of people who prefer
to meet charity halfway. It was with this in mind that we
developed our CRAFTS DEPARTMENT which enables 200 families and
individuals to earn their own living. Eligible for inclusion
into this programme of self help are those who are unable to
find outside employment because of age, disability or other
circumstances beyond their control. Whilst their skillful
hands produce beautiful and useful articles, we have accepted
the responsibility to find a market for them. Every purchase
means double value for your money because you not only receive
attractive hand-made goods, but at the same time the assurance
that you have provided the daily rice to a family in need.
