Hong Kong Christian Service

After a year of evaluation, planning and major decision
making for the future direction, 1971 was a year of
participation and action for Hong Kong Christian Service.

During the year of 1971 Hong Kong Christian Service
sponsored the Seminar on Drugs, Seminar on Care for Old
Age in Hong Kong and the Christian Youth Seminar. The
Seminar on Drugs, jointly sponsored by Hong Kong Christian
Service and Audio Visual Evangelism Committee, aimed to
provide information and a forum to discuss the problems
and dangers of drugs among middle school teachers. Over
60 teachers and headmasters from local Christian schools
participated the Semianr. In September 1971, Hong Kong
Christian Service and Caritas sponsored the "Seminar on
Care for Old Age in Hong Kong". Four hundred participants,
from churches and practically all branches of social
services participated to disucss the problems and care
for the aged in the community. The full report of seminar
is being complied n d printed for reference material.
                                          a
During the year Hong Kong Christian Service had made
several appeals for the East Pakistan refugees' relief
                                                                                 s
work which included our response to the community’ appeal:
Mercy Ship Project. To show our support to the United
Christian Hospital fund raising campaign Hong Kong Christian
Service seconded two of its staff to the United Christian
Hospital Fund-Raising Committee for a period of three months.

We are now in the process of launching a new project
to care for 60-80 severely mental retarded children. The
project is sponsored by eight local church groups and
social service agencies with Hong Kong Christian Service
serving as co-ordinator. This project has gained financial
support from the Basel Mission to sponsor two nurses
                    obtaining professional training in overseas.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Christian Service endeavours to
prepare a film-strip of Christian Social Service in Hong
Kong and to set up an information Library. The film-strip
aims to introduce local Christian Service programs which
w i l l highlight the past history and future trend. The
Information Library is set up for collecting all existing
and new materials in the field of social services for
                    reference use.

In the coming years Hong Kong Christian Service
continues to coordinate the local churches and social
service agencies to instigate the new efforts to meet the
                     changing social needs.
