During the year Hong Kong Christian Service made three appeals to
all Christian churches and schools to give financial support for Biafra
Relief, Plain of Jars (Laos) and East Pakistan. It is encouraging to
see the active participation of the church and the community in showing
their concern by giving money to the needs of other countries at the
end of February 8th, 1971 a total of HK$65,396.55 was raised for the
disaster in East Pakistan. All money received has been channelled
through the Division of Inter-Church Aid, Refugee and World Service of
the World Council of Churches.
The live-in Seminar, a new programme for seminary students, is
sponsored 1y the Joint Seminary Committee. Twenty-two students from
Chung Chi College Theology Division, Concordia Lutheran Seminary and
Holy Spirit Seminary (Reman Catholic) participated in this programme.
The first ”Live-in" Seminar was conducted on November 27 and 28, and
December A and 5, 1970. The students were divided into seven groups
and were assigned to stay in one of the boys training centres of the
Prisons!s Department for a week-end to study the problem of juvenile
delinquency. The second and third seminars will be studying the
problems of drug addiction and bars and bar girls.
The Wah Hong Hostel Management Committee accepted the Chinese
Rhenish Church, Hong Kong Synod, as the eleventh member of the Committee.
The Hostel has demonstrated a new form of service for elderly people
which had proven to be successful. At the end of December 1970 there
were a total of 119 residents living at the Hostel which included 37
single male, 68 single female and 10 couples. Our request for a second
hostel on the kov/loon side has been approved by the Government. The
location for the second hostel will be on the first floor of Block 2
of Kwai Fong Low Cost Hearing in Tsuen Wan, N. T.
The Government of the United States of America has officially
announced that all Public Law A80 commodities to Hong Kong will be
terminated by June 30, 1971. During the last eighteen years the total
value of food received from US Government has amounted to US$50 million
(excluding costs for ocean freight).
With the implementation of the new Public Assistance Scheme by the
Social Welfare Department and the improvement of the living standard
and economic development of Hong Kong the need for material aid is not
as great as before. Nevertheless, Hong Kong Christian Service will still
maintain a close relationship with Church World Service/NY to cope with
any disaster which may arise in the future.
DIVISION FOR SPECIALISED MINISTRIES
The Division for Specialized Ministries recognizes that today's
society is more complex than the simple pre-industrial society, and that
the earlier structure of the Church on a geographical basis alone cannot
meet the needs of such a pluralistic society. Specialised ministries are
necessary in addition to the local ministry. Rapid industrialization is a
key factor in Hong Kong's life and the specialised industrial ministry
