HONG KONG CHRISTIAN SERVICE
1970 was a year of evaluation, planning and major decision-making
for the future direction of Hong Kong Christian Service. On December
8th, 1970. The Executive Committee approved the Future Direction Paper
with the following six basic goals:
               1. To work with Christians to become a leaven of active concern
and justice through service to all the poeple of Hong Kong and
                    beyond.
               2. To develop in Christians an awareness and a knowledge of social
issues and assist them in the understanding of appropriate action.
               3. To stimulate local church interest and involvement by increasing
Chinese representation, participation and support at all levels.
4 . To widen membership of denominations and Christian service
                    agencies.

5 . To improve co-ordination and interpretation of service provided
                    by churches and Christian agencies.

               6. To modify or terminate present operating projects or introduce
new projects to make the achievement of the above goals possible.

There are three major steps and twenty-four concrete procedures and
plans for the achievement of the above goals. One of the immediate
changes for HKCS was to use both Chinese and English in Committee
meetings, reports and documents. It is hoped that through this first
step that a closer relationship with local churches and agencies will
be able to develop and that the old image of a "foreign relief agency”
           will be carried away.
Hong Kong Christian Service appreciates the continuing support of
the Church World Service, New York, and the Community Chest of Hong
Kong. During the year HK$ 59,000.00 was received from CWS/NY and
HK$80,000.00 from the Community Chest. We are fortunate to be able
to maintain self-support for all operating departments. However, we
still need funds to support general administration and programs
           conducted on an experimental basis.
Hong Kong Christian Service still maintains a close relationship
with Asian Christian Service and serves as their representative in
           handling orders, supplies and payment.

As a contracting agency for the Refugee and Migration Unit of the
American Consulate General, a total of HK$562,680,00 (US$931780.00)
was made available for supporting five projects in 1970.
As an inter-church aid agency for the World Council of Churches
a total of HK$420,l80.78 (US$70,030.13) was channelled through HKCS
           for ten projects.
For the last two decades Hong Kong has been enjoying generous
financial support from overseas. In moving to a new decade with a
booming economy and admitting the fact that financial resources are
available among the churches it is time for us in Hong Kong to share
a part in the support of inter-church aid projects both within and
           outside Hong Kong.
