Plans for the Week of Christian Unity, 1970: The Committee decided
that for 1970, there will be a Joint Planning Committee made up
of representatives of the Hong Kong Christian Council, the Roman
Catholic Church, and the Ministers and Clergy Group. It is hoped
that the program will include a large city-wide bi-lingual service,
district meetings and fellowship meetings.
Conversations on Church Unity - Reference has been made in the
general report to the conversations on Church Unity presently underway.
It is hoped that these may be expanded.
Plans for a Consultation on Church Unity are under consideration
for late fall 1969 or early winter, 1970. It is hoped that this
Consultation may suggest ways in which the unity of the Church may
be made more visible in Honp; Kong.
ECUMENICAL LIBRARY COMMITTEE.
The purpose of the Ecumenical Library is to provide materials
in limited areas in both English and Chinese to use by the Church
in Hong Kong and by visiting scholars. During this year several
hundred new volumes have been added to the library, primarily
for the work of the committees, such as Christian Education and
Industrial Committee. A word of grateful appreciation is due
Mrs. S. C. Leung for the donation of many of Dr. Leung’s books to
the library.
Up until now materials are available for use only in the
library itself. However, despite the availability of the facilities
and a librarian, it has not been widely used. Plans are under
consideration to circulate lists of books available to the various
churches. It is hoped that use of the library may be expanded
during the next year.
COMMITTEE ON MISSIONARY ORIENTATION AND LANGUAGE STUDY
We are happy to report that during the year, the Committee managed
to function in arranging a Missionary Night for the first term
missionaries on 29th May, 1968, at the Conference Room of the Council
when we had a brief introductory talk on "Missionary Orientation"
by the Rev. Miss Lee Chinp Chee followed by discussion, then Mr.
Calvin Ngai introduced the work of the HKCC and its related
organizations followed by those visits to the Christian Centre
floors. There were 26 present that evening, and they seemed to
appreciate such an opportunity of getting together.
Then on 19th October, 1968, the Committee organized a Day
Orientation Course held at the Methodist Conference Centre,
Silvermine Bay, from 9 a.m . - 5:30 p.m. This was specially
organized for the first term missionaries and those interested.
An address on "Chinese Ways of Thinking" was given by the Rev.
Miss Lee Ching Chee followed by questions and discussion. Then
the theme in the afternoon was "The Chinese Church in Hong Kong"
in three aspects - "Its. Life and Outlook” by the Rev. Nai Wang Kwok,
"Its Special Minintries" by the Rev. William Tung, and "Denominations
and Cooperation” by the Rev. David Lew. 4 2 people participated and
seemed to find the day worthwhile.
