Also at the invitation of the Roman Catholic Church, the
Council appointed 6 Scripture Readers for the two Prayer Services
held at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Hong Kong and the St. Tereasa's
Church, Kowloon, at the same time on Thursday, l8th January, 1968
at 6:00 p.m. Rev. Wong Tsok, Chairman of our Church Unity Committee
was invited to preach at the Prayer Service held at the St. Tereasa's
Church.
The United Prayer Service for Christian Unity sponsored by
the Council took place on Monday 22nd January, 1968 at 8:00 p.m.
at Kowloon Union Church. The Rev. Canon S. K. Lee preached on the
theme: "To The Praise Of His Glory”. The Ying Wah Girls' Middle
School Choir give two special anthems and ministers from 10 different
churches participated in the programme. The feature this year
being the common poster jointly designed by the Roman Catholic
Church and the Council and, for the first time, a Roman Catholic
representative, Father Edward Collins was invited by the Council
to participate in the programme as Scripture Reader.
Suggestion for Special Sundays, 1968
In view of the need for more uniformity in emphasising various
phases of our Christian concern it was resolved at the Council's
Executive Committee Meeting to ask all churches in Hong Kong to
observe the following Special Sundays for i960.
Christian Unity Sunday January 21st (3rd Sunday)
Labour Sunday April 28th (4th Sunday)
Christian Family Life Sunday May 12th (2nd Sunday)
Christian Citizenship Sunday July l4th (2nd Sunday)
Christian Literature Sunday Sept. 22nd (4th Sunday)
World Wide Holy Communion Sundy October 6th (1st Sunday)
Medical Sunday October 20th (3rd Sunday)
Bible Sunday December 8th (2nd Sunday)
We are happy to report that many churches have cooperated in
this joint effort.
Closer Co-operation with the Chinese Churches Union
The Council supports the Chinese Churches Union in publishing
a Chinese Christian Weekly paper which is now entering its third year
with a circulation at present of some 4000 copies. The Chairman
and Secretary of this Committee serve as Executive members of the
Editorial Board of the Christian Weekly. By so doing, activities
of the Council and development of the ecumenical movement around
the world are made known to members of all local churches.
Also the Council invited the Rev. David Lew, newly elected
General Secretary of the Chinese Churches Union to attend the
Council’s Executive Committee meetings as observer in order to
establish a better understanding and closer working relationship
between the two organizations.
Note: Church Unity Committee and the Committee for Cooperation on
Church Development and Planning are being united into one
new "Church Unity and Development Committee” of the Hong
Kong Christian Council.
6. Ecumenical Scholarship Exchange Committee
During the year the following types of Scholarships were
available:
(1) Through the generosity of Miss Emma Kaufman of Toronto, a
Visiting Fellowship of $1,500 will be available at the Canadian
School of Missions and Ecumenical Institute, Toronto, in each
of the academic years 1967-68 and 1968-69.
