8. Youth Committee

The Youth Committee of the Hong Kong Christian Council had the
honour to be the host of the Youth Committee of the EACC participating
in the Preparatory Committee of the 1966 Consultation which was held at
Tao Fong Shan, Shatin, N.T., Hong Kong on June 21st - 26th, 1965. This
meeting was divided into two parts:-

                      a. June 21st - 24th studies on Life and Service of Young Churchmen.
                     b. June 25th - 26th planning of 1966 consultation.

Working papers Before the Hong Kong Consultation, papers had been
prepared by members of the Committee and these have been discussed
thoroughly and rewritten by the Committee. It was agreed that final
titles of the working papers be published as a Preparatory Workbook
                 for the 1966 Consultation.

This 1966 Consultation on "The Church, Young Churchmen, and the
Nation" will be sponsored by the Committee on Youth Work, East Asia
Christian Conference in co-operation with the National Christian
Council of Korea. The site of this Consultation will be near Seoul,
Korea. The total participants will be 81 persons. This Consultation
was scheduled to be held on October 12th - 25th, 1966.

On June 23rd, 1965 evening, an all Hong Kong Christian Youth Meeting
was held at the Chinese Methodist Church, Kowloon to meet the Committee.
After the worship, an open discussion on "Life of Youth in Asia To-day"
was held. Over 300 young people from different denominations attended.

The Youth Committee regrets that it has not done all it should
during the past year; but with the support of a fulltime or even part-
time secretary, it will be able to do a groat deal more, especially co-
ordinating the youth work of the different churches.

       IV. WORK OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES

             1. Christian Centre Committee

It has long been the hope that the Hong Kong Christian Council
might have a permanent home. For several years it was proposed that
a Christian Centre be erected in conjunction with Kowloon Union Church
at the corner of Cox & Jordan Roads, Kowloon. Prohibitive cost of
building, however, made this project impossible to carry out.

Recently, after a long search for alternatives, it has been decided
to purchase four floors, with 2,832 useable square feet of space on each
floor, in a fine building now being erected at the corner of Peking &
Hankow Roads, Kowloon. This is an excellent location, and the China
Committee of the Asia Department in New York has concurred in this
                  intention.

The agencies wishing to occupy space in the Christian Centre are
the Hong Kong Christian Council, the Hong Kong Christian Welfare and
Relief Council, the Audio-Visual Evangelism Committee, and the Chinese
Christian Literature Council. There will be an Ecumenical Reference
Library in the Centre which will be a unique feature made possible by
                  a special gift.

The Methodist Church, Hong Kong District (Wei Li Hui) and the
Hong Kong Chinese Christian Churches Union have decided to purchase two
floors in the building and this intention encourages the spirit of co-
operation immensely. Also, the Extra-Mural Department of the Chinese
University of Hong Kong will require ten thousand feet of office space
and is seriously considering coming into the building.

The purchase price of the four floors is HK$882,800. Adding to
this other costs, such as stamp duty, lawyers' foes, furnishings, etc.,
the total transaction will approach the million dollar mark.
