WORK OF STANDING COMMITTEES
1. Christian Education Committee
The Christian Education Committee of the Hong Kong Christian
Council held 8 meetings during the calendar year 1965} with an
average attendance of 7 persons.
The Committee conceives of its basic function as that of the
training of leaders, for the Sunday School, and for other aspects
of the church’ program.
s
The Committee worked on two major projects:
1. Leadership Training Institute A leadership training
institute was conducted for the beofit of leaders of
children and younger youth. Four sessions were held
on Sunday afternoons in September, October, and
November. The average attendance was 76 persons, from
a number of denominational groups. Each session started
with a devotional period. This was followed by a lecture
or a demonstration of teaching with a group of children,
on the general theme of worship with children. After a
short recess for refreshments and fellowship, the group
was shown a filmstrip, or a demonstration,-on the use of
visual aids, after which they divided into smaller groups
for actual practice in the preparation of the visual aids.
It was the first time this Committee had planned a ,fwork-
shop" type of program, and there was enthusiasm for this
approach. The sessions lasted from two-thirty to five-
thirty in the afternoon.
2. Pictures and picture-booklets The World Council on Christ-
ian Education makes available upon request packets of large
teacning pictures, and also small booklets of pictures and
stories of Bible events. These are a gift of the children
of the United States and Canada. The Christian Education
Committee requested and received:
10,000 New Testament picture books in Chinese
1.000 New Testament picture books in English
1.000 Old Testament pictures books in English
350 sets of New Testament pictures in sets of 16
Churches were invited to avail themselves of these. They were asked
for a contribution of HK$1.00 for each set of pictures, to offset
costs for transportation in Hong Kong.
By the end of the year:
167 sets of pictures had been given out. Each set also contains
10 picture books.
30 sets of 10 picture books, have been given out.
Thus a total of 1,970 books has been given out, 1,670 in the
sets of pictures, and 300 separately, most of these were in Chinese.
The World Council on Christian Education has not yet printed
the picture books of Old Testament stories in Chinese. Correspondence
has been carried on, and arrangements made for the Christian Ed-
ucation Committee to print these booklets in Hong Kong. The paper
on which the pictures are already printed, is being sent from the
United States, and the World Council on Christian Education will
bear the major expenses of the printing.
