In a world of injustice, we realize that a tremendous
task remains to be done on the development front within
the churches. We need to keep our churches informed about
development issues by creating a development education
programme.
Since development aims at changing the quality of life
for both individuals and communities, the churches need to
help Christians and others understand the root causes of
underdevelopment and enable them to participate effectively
in promoting.change. "It is our aim to enable each individual
in our community to have a better and fuller life."
The Gospel is the good news that God offers salvation
to man and that God acts to help man accept this salvation.
Man must respond to this action of God by finding himself in
God's purpose and his freedom in God's service. The Church
is called to witness and to reconcile the whole world to God.
Therefore, salvation is not just for the individual soul.
It is a.process which means liberation from the material,
political, psychological, economic, religious and social
chains that enslave man.
As the Church in Hong Kong becomes even more aware of
its responsibility in meeting the needs of men and women of
every circumstance of life, the necessity for strong, committed
leadership grows. To be effective in this task and in the
nurture and proclamation of the faith of Jesus Christ,
awakened, vital, enthusiastic Christians, both clergy and
lay, are urgently needed.
