VI.  WORK  OF  SPECIAL  COMMITTEES
               United  Protestant  Hospital  Conmittee       (Cont’ d)

               The  Hongkong  Christian  Council  considered  the  document  carefully  and  on
          one  occasion  invited  Dr.  E. H.  Paterson,  a  key  person  in  its   drafting,
          to  explain  the  proposal  and  answer  questions.  It  gained  fu ll  supportll  '
          from  members  of  the  Council  and  this  Special  Committee  was  formed.

               O fficia l  application  for  a  site  for  the  proposed  Hospital  has  been  sent
          to  the  Government  and  it  is  reported  that  a  site  has  been  tentatively  earmarked
          at  the  end  of  the  Waterloo  Road  for  this  purpose.    Capital  funds  m i^t  be
          available  from  the  following  sources:

               1)  Refugee  M igration  Unit  of  the  U.S.  Consulate
               2)  The  American  Methodist  Mission
               3)  Various  other  Missions  in  Hongkong
               4)  Fund  for  a  children’ s  wing  from  World  Vision,  Inc,
                        as  indicated  by  Bishop  R.O.  Hall
               5)  Contributions  from  local  churches
               6)  Contribution  from  churches  in  Britain,  Germany,  Svdtzerland
               7)  Contribution  from  church  groups  in  the  U.S.A.

               What  is  proposed  is  to  construct  a  600  bed  General  Hospita l  with  at  least
          300  acute  general  beds  providing  services  in  Medicine,  Surgery,  Gynaecology,
          and  possibly  Obstetrics.  There  w ill  be  other  beds  for  geriatric  patients  and
          those  with  incurable  diseases  who  need  hospital  care.      The  numbers  suggested
          in  the  original  study were  100  beds  for  geriatric  and  incurable  cases,  and
          200  beds  for  convalescent  patients.

               It  is  anticipated  that  the  of f ic i a l reply from  governmeat  will   be  shortly
          received   and  that  it   w ill  offe r.a   subvention on  a  d e ficit b a sis.



          4.  Women’ s  World  Day  of  Prayer  Committee        The  77th  Women' s  World  Day  of
                                                                 Prayer  took  place  on  1st  March,
          the  firs t  Friday  in  Lent.   About  1,500  women  from  a ll  Christian  churches  and
          nationalities  fille d   the  auditorium  of  the  City  Hall  where  the  service  was
          held,  the  theme  this  year  being  "More  Than  Conquerors".


               I t  was  conducted  by  Miss  Wong  Yuk  Mui  and  Miss  Jean  Windsor.
          Miss  Ko.  Siu  Wah,  General  Secretary  of  the..Y.W .C.A., gave  the, address
              in Chinese  and  Miss Wilna  Thomas,  Associated Secretary of  the  Board
          of  World  Mission,  United  Church  of  Canada,  gave  the  English  address.



               A  combined  Choir  o f  80  Chinese  and ■"Euimpean Ghnisfiaa-'wb'inea 'gave
          'a^wonderful  anthem  conducted  by  Miss  Chan  Shun  Wah  with  Miss  Edna  Wong
          as  the  accompanist.                    ‘                                             .
