previous year. The Rev. S.K. Lee preached on the theme "He is the
Great Shepherd". A combined choir gave a special anthem. This year
Roman Catholic priests attended 3 Christian Unity Services held in
Protestant churches, namely Christ Church, Hong Kong Chinese Methodist
Church, and St. John’s Cathedral. At the invitation of the Roman
Catholic Bishop Bianchi, 12 members of our Council attended the Reman
Catholic mass for Christian Unity held on 22 January, at 6:00 P.M. at
the Roman Catholic Cathedral.
In this age of increasing tensions in a world dominsted by disunity,
fear and suspicion, the call to prayer for Christian Unity comes as a
fresh challenge and opportunity for reconciliation.
b. Suggestion for Special Sundays, 1964
In view of the need for emphasising our Christian concern for
the promotion of different phases of the Church’s task and for the
sake of uniformity in the Church Calender, the Council has asked all
local churches to observe the following Special Sundays.
Christian Unity Sunday January 19th (3rd Sunday)
Labour Sunday April 26th (4th Sunday)
Christian Family Sunday May 10th (2nd Sunday)
Commonwealth Youth Sunday May 24th (4th Sunday)
Christian Citizenship Sunday July 12th (2nd Sunday)
Christian Literature Sunday September 20th (3rd Sunday)
World Wide Holy Communion Sunday October 4th (1st Sunday)
Medical Sunday October l8th (3rd Sunday)
Bible Sunday December 13th (2nd Sunday)
It was reported that many churches have observed the Sundays as
suggested.
c. Informal discussions with local church leaders
From time to time, the Committee has-invited small group of
church leaders who are in "policy-making" positions to explore
possibilities of a greater unity among churches by closer cooperation.
In their discussions widely-different opinions were freely expressed,
but all helpful in preparing us for one-ness as we respond to His Call
and commit ourselves in His Mission.
Ecumenical Scholarship Exchange Committee
During the year the following types of Scholarships were available:
(l) Theological Scholarships and Fellowships; (2) Theological Scholarship
for the Laity; (3) Special Theological Scholarships for Women; (4)
Professional and Technical Scholarships; (5) Ecumenical Scholarship
Exchange Scholarship; (6) East Asia Christian Churches Scholarships.
The above Scholarships, designed to strengthen the common life and
ecumenical consciousness of the churches through a church-to-church
exchange of students, were available in a variety of countries such
as Austria, Canada, France, Germany Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the
Scandinavian Countries, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the
United States, as well as in a special cases in Asia and Africa.
Young men and women who are preparing for full time Christian
service and have completed all or most of their basic theological study;
candidates for tne ministry and pastors; persons preparing for other
fonns of full time employment in the church or related organizations
if they neet the necessary qualifications, are all eligible to apply
for any one of the stated scholarships.
During the year an Ecumenical Scholarship was granted to Mr. Chan
Kwok Keung for post graduate study in the field of education in U.S.A.
