       1. Introduction:

       (1) United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service
             • The Kwong Fuk Community Health Centre started its operation in Tai Po district in July 2001. The centre
sets up as a new model by integrating medical clinic, health maintenance and preventive services.
              • A new dental clinic was opened in Fu Heng Community Health Centre in August 2001. A new self-paying
staff dental clinic started its service inside Alice Ho Mui Ling Nethersole Hospital in April 2001.
              • Funded by the Tai Po District Board, Community Nutrition Service conducted a Calcium Promotion Project
from September to December 2001. A total of 6,659 students attended the health talks while 1,550 people participated
in the promotion activities (health check, high calcium food tasting, games, etc.).
              • The Health Promoting Schools Project for Kwun Tong was started in cooperation with United Christian
Hospital in 2001. 3 secondary schools were first accepted as members. With sponsorship from the Commission On
Youth, the "Student Health Leaders Training Course" was organized to help students attain more health concepts and
knowledge. 34 Students Health Leaders graduated at the end of the course.

        (2) UCMS Fund Raising Activities

During August 2001, the United Christian Medical Service organized a series of fund raising activities for the
"United Charity Month '01": 'Charity Housing Estate Competition', 'Public Light Bus Charity Ride', 'Kwun Tong
District Charity Nite' and 'Raffle Tickets'. With the generous support of the donors, a total sum of HK$3.7 million has
been raised for the commissioning of the "Ambulatory Care Centre" of Block P.

        (3) UCMS Long Service Award

To show appreciation for the loyalty of the long serving staff, a total of 138 and 27 UCMS staff were presented
the Long Service Awards and Retirement Awards respectively in December 2001.

        (4) Chaplaincy Service
              • A new project named Community-based Psychospiritual Care and Support Programme was started this year.
30 Christian volunteers completed basic counseling training and would provide psychospiritual care and support to

psychiatric outpatients with mood disorders. The volunteer to patient ratio was 1:2 and the service duration was one
year. A professional counselor was employed as the project supervisor who provided clinical supervision and support
to the volunteers. The patients' responses and the research findings confirmed that the project was a success.
By working with the churches in the neighborhood, the chaplaincy staff trained their members to become

pastoral visitors. The church members involved rendered regular visits to the in-patients and offered prayers. Their
ministry for the sick built up a strong co-operation between the hospital and their churches.
