         A. Alice Ho M iu Ling Nethersole Hospital

          1. Introduction:

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital was founded by the former London Missionary Society in 1887.
With the legacy of a Christian heritage and a pioneering spirit, the Hospital has been playing a vital role in the
provision of health care service in Hong Kong for more than a century. It was the first hospital in Hong Kong to
offer local Chinese with medical service based on western medical principles. In the early 70s, the Hospital

deployed its staff to commission the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong. Similarly, the relocation of
Nethersole from Bonham Road to Chai Wan in 1993 for commissioning the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern
         Hospital marked another developmental milestone.
In 1997, another new general acute hospital with its modem building and advanced technology was opened
in Tai Po. The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Nursing Home in Kowloon Bay, the first Nursing Home estab-
lished by the Executive Committee, began admitting residents in 1999.

The Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education was inaugurated in January 2002 with
an aim to strengthen the Nethersole heritage of compassionate care and holistic service through a structured and
systematic education process. The philosophy and practice of holistic health and care will be more widely
disseminated, in puisuant to the object of the Hospital to "demonstrate Christian belief in the wholeness of man,
         his body, mind and spirit".
The Nethersole Hospital Museum sited at Tai Po was opened in February 2002. Its purpose is to illustrate
the changes and to preserve historical documents, photographs and equipment, to honour our forefathers, and to
         inspire our successors.
