C. Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee

      1. Introduction:

Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee (CIC) was established by the Hong Kong Christian Council in
1968 as its auxiliary organization. Hong Kong’s manufacturing industries took off in the I960’s-70’s. At that
time, workers were seriously exploited. Since its birth, CIC has been actively involved in labour disputes,
organized various kinds of labor education programs, developed occupational injury services and promoted an
independent trade union movement. In 1990, with the help of CIC, the first independent trade union federation,
the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions, was established. Moreover, a labor church was set up in the
1970^ for evangelizing workers and for theological reflection on labor issues.

Since 1993, CIC has actively developed the China program. CIC conducted numerous field research
projects on the working conditions of various manufacturing industries in South China. Such research has
become very important information to international and Hong Kong consumer campaigns to promote workers’
rights in China. Now, CIC has developed different services to workers in the Mainland, including a clinic,
      rehabilitation centre and paralegal services.
